Sleeping when it’s hot is unbearable. It’s sticky and sweaty and no amount of tossing and turning can help.

What happens to my body when I’m hot?

When your body is hot and the temperature is rising you get a physical reaction. Your body starts to sweat and the evaporative cooling process is the thing that your body does to cool down. Your blood pressure falls, your blood vessels dilate and your heart rate rises. This is because your heart has to work harder to maintain the amount of blood being pumped around the body. This is called Vasodilation and it is why you can’t sleep.

A pocket sprung mattress will allow your sweat to evaporate easily because air can flow freely through the fibres. Materials like cotton and silk, which have moisture-wicking properties, are usually the materials used for a pocket sprung mattress. This means that as well as free airflow, your sweat will be wicked away from your body.

However, sometimes this isn’t enough to cool you down and what if you prefer to sleep on a memory foam or latex mattress?

The term “wicking away” means that the material absorbs the sweat and expands while holding it but does not do anything to speed up the evaporation process. Polyester fibres and standard round fibres by collecting the moisture make you feel sweaty and this is why memory foam mattress are notoriously hot.

Can Coolmax save the day, or rather night?

Coolmax fibres

This is where the specially engineered Coolmax comes in. Coolmax is a high-tech fabric specifically and uniquely engineered to keep users dry.

This innovative fibre system helps you thermoregulates your body with its specially designed channel fibres. Thermoregulate means that you can keep your body temperature within certain boundaries, even when the surrounding temperature is very different.

Coolmax fibres are different from cotton and polyester fibres. Standard fibres are round whereas Coolfax fibres are imbedded with ridges to increase the surface area. By increasing the surface area, you get a transport system that pulls moisture away from the body, it then as an increased amount of space to disperse the moisture, which consequently, dries that moisture faster. This allows your sweat to evaporate faster from your skin to the outer world, cooling you down.

We put this layer of fabric on the outer layer on our adjustable latex and memory foam mattresses to keep you cool, dry and comfortable throughout the night.
