Adjustable beds can give you back your independence, especially if you suffer from spinal, joint or circulation problems, have trouble breathing or if you struggle to get in and out of bed. They can give you the great night’s sleep that you deserve at the simple touch of a button. Adjustable beds perfectly support your knee joints, back and neck in the perfect sleeping position. This also helps with blood circulation. However, it can be stressful finding bed accessories for your adjustable bed especially with the huge range of bedding that’s out there.
Do adjustable beds need different sized bedding?
The answer is yes! Adjustable beds serve a different purpose and therefore you need bedding that mirrors that purpose. There is nothing worse than having a sheet that is too small for the bed and having it continuously popping off of the mattress edge. This won’t be conducive to a good night’s sleep. Here’s a guide for things to look out for when you’re buying bedding for your adjustable bed…
Things to look out for when buying sheets for an adjustable bed:
Elasticity
Common mattress sheets will usually have elasticated corners; however, this type of sheet can still easily “ping off” the mattress. Instead, look for sheets that have elastic all the way around. Because your sheet will need to stay on even when your mattress is in a semi-contorted position, the more flexibility and elastic grip the better. Therefore, it will more likely be able to stay on and grip the edges of the bed.
Deep depth
Often when a sheet fails to stay on it’s because it isn’t deep enough. All our mattresses are 8” thick. So, make sure you get one that goes over so that when the mattress moves the sheet will stay wrapped around your mattress. Some sheets called “deep box shape” or “deep fitted sheets” pull-down deep under the mattress and go quite far. This ensures that the sheet is extra snug and won’t move especially when the bed is in the sit-up position. For smooth, un-puckered sheets, all night long, go for this type of fitted sheet.
Quality
sheets get a lot of wear and tear so it’s worth investing. Make sure the elastic is good quality and won’t wear out. The type of fabric and thread count is largely down to personal preference. Adjustable bed sheets don’t have to empty your wallet, search around to make sure you find the best deal for you.
Length
Now, this is the most important point. A typical mattress length is 6ft 3”, however, to allow for the bed to bend and give you enough room, adjustable beds are made longer. Ours measure up as 6ft 6”. This means that regular fitted sheets just won’t cut it. You need sheets that move with the bed, therefore you’ll need sheets with a lot of extra room. So, make sure you know that depth, length and width of your adjustable bed before purchasing fitted sheets or mattress protectors.
Should I get double or single bed linens for my adjustable bed frame?
We often get asked; what sheet is right for a dual-action electric adjustable bed? Well, for single and small single beds you need a single sized fitted sheet, likewise, you need a double-sized sheet for a double adjustable bed and so on for king size and super king size.
But what about a dual action bed?
A dual-action bed has two separate adjustable single beds, side-by-side, for you and your partner to sleep in the position that is uniquely required for you. Gone are the days of compromising on what mattress to have. In a dual-action bed, you can sleep in whatever position you want regardless of how your partner prefers to sleep.
However, having one double sheet to go over these two moving mattresses is not ideal. Therefore, you need two single fitted sheets for one dual bed. Here’s a top tip: to help you put the sheet on, put the bed in the semi-contoured position to make it easier to reach and hook the sheet around the mattress.
Material
The material you choose for your duvet covers and bedding sets is largely up to your preferences, and choosing the right one will ultimately lead to a more restful night’s sleep. But in case you’re struggling, here are a few pointers on how to decide and what to look for.
An obvious choice is 100% cotton or for a bit of extra luxury opt for Egyptian cotton. This breathable fabric is soft and will last for years. Because of its wicking properties, cotton allows your body to evaporate sweat more easily, helping your body stay cool while you sleep. This might be preferable if you have a memory foam mattress, which can often get quite warm. The extra cooling properties of cotton will help regulate your body temperature.
Make sure to look at the thickness of the sheets you’re buying, some are seasonal. It might be a good idea to get a thicker sheet for the winter and thinner sheets for the summer if your house varies in temperature throughout the year.
Another option is a 50-50 cotton-polyester split. Sometimes this combination makes that sheets even softer. Also, polyester is strong and lasts even longer than just cotton.
Do you suffer from allergies? If you do, it’s worth looking at labels to see if your sheets are hypoallergenic. These types of sheets help prevent the build-up of dust, dust mites, bed bugs and pollen, letting you sleep without suffering from allergic reactions
