Here at Oak Tree Mobility, we often get asked; what is the ideal mattress to go with an adjustable bed? Won’t it wear out because the base bends it? Well, fear not! Our mattresses are specially designed so that they function with an adjustable base. This means that you don’t have to worry about it wearing out or breaking.
In this guide, we’ll take you through the best mattress options for you when buying an adjustable bed so you can get a great night’s sleep.
Why get an electric adjustable bed?
The benefits of having an adjustable bed are that at the touch of a button it can be bent and moulded to the shape of your body, giving you the proper comfort and support you need to get a good night’s sleep. Did you know that sleeping flat is not the best sleeping position? When sleeping flat, your joints are not supported properly. The ultimate sleeping position is in a semi-contoured state; it supports your legs, hips, lumbar region and neck. This is especially important if you have breathing problems, spinal conditions, joint pain or circulation issues.
The importance of flexibility
The most important thing to consider when buying an adjustable bed is to think about flexibility. Ideally, you want a mattress that has lots of flexibility, because it will allow the mattress to last longer.
We understand that you don’t want a bed that only lasts a few years. That’s why you need one that is specially designed to be used as an adjustable bed to prevent unwanted damage. You want it to bend and flex to follow the contour of the bed base and your body, but still, maintain the support that you need as well as the structural integrity for it to last for years to come.
Pocket sprung
Usually, if you buy a standard pocket sprung mattress for an adjustable bed base, it won’t work. The springs will be too stiff to properly curve around your body and the base and bending it will ultimately cut the lifespan of your mattress. This is because springs aren’t meant to bend, and often if they are bent out of shape it can cause the springs to roll together, damaging the structure of the mattress. This is why we don’t recommend buying a standard mattress for your adjustable bed base.
Our Pocket Sprung mattresses are specially made to be more flexible than a standard pocket sprung. Therefore, you can be assured that they will last for years to come while enjoying the comfort and health benefits of an adjustable bed. You can choose between a soft mattress with 1000 pocketed springs, a medium tension with 1200 springs or a slightly firmer one with 2150 individual springs. The firmness you choose depends on your weight. So, the lighter you are the softer your mattress will need to be. Getting the correct firmness will also help elongate the life of your new mattress.
Memory foam and latex
We understand that everyone has their personal preferences. Odds are you’re either a pocket sprung lover or a memory foam advocate. We provide pocket sprung mattresses that work with our adjustable beds for the people who prefer pocket sprung mattresses and need that extra firmness.
However, to gain the ultimate support and comfort of an adjustable bed whilst also having a mattress that lasts even longer, we recommend latex or memory foam mattresses. When it comes to memory foam, it is virtually flawless. There are no moving parts, making it super flexible and therefore, longer-lasting.
You cannot beat them on comfort, durability and support. They are flexible enough to match the curves of adjustable bases, without compromising on comfort and support. They are also designed to relieve your pressure points and pain because the foam curves to the shape of your body and evenly supports your weight.
Therefore, although we do provide a pocket sprung mattress for your adjustable bed if this is your preference, we highly recommend choosing a memory foam because it will ultimately last much longer.
Is thickness important?
When buying an adjustable bed, the mattress thickness is a key component that needs to be considered. In the market, there is a huge range of thicknesses that you can buy that range in levels of support and firmness. However, with an adjustable bed, if the mattress is too thick it will not bend properly to the adjustable base and if it is too shallow then it won’t support you properly. Ultimately, a thinner mattress will wear and sag more easily, lessening its life. Neither of these scenarios is beneficial.
That’s why all of our mattresses are 8” thick. We’ve worked with experts to discern that this is the ideal thickness for comfort, support and durability. Now you can be sure that you’re getting the best when you buy our adjustable beds and mattresses together.
Is length important?
A standard bed is often the length of 6ft 3in. So naturally, adjustable mattresses need to be longer if you want them to bend. That’s why our mattresses go up to 6ft 9in to allow for that extra contouring.
